Contest Rules:

How to Enter: This contest begins at 12:01 A.M. Eastern Time (ET) Tuesday, March 6, 2018 and ends at 11:59 P.M. ET on Friday, April 6, 2018. All entries submitted both online and via postal mail, must be received or post-marked by April 6, 2018. You must be a City of Elizabeth resident and/or attend a school within Elizabeth to participate in this contest.

To enter via email, please send your typed submission to, along with the submission form. To enter via postal mail, submit your essay by mailing your entry to: Kelly Martins, Bureau of Public Information, 50 Winfield Scott Plaza, Room 211, Elizabeth, NJ 07201.

All handwritten entries must be legible and include the entry form. The City of Elizabeth is not responsible for lost, late, illegible or incomplete entries, postage-due mail or entries not received for any reason. By entering, each participant states that his or her entry is a product of their own research, writing and original work. Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each participant. Each contestant must complete and attach the entry form provided. Essays will not be returned to the author; they become property of the City of Elizabeth.

Judging: Five (5) winners from each grade (3rd, 4th and 5th) will be chosen, including First, Second and Third place as well as two (2) Honorable Mentions and will be selected by a panel of City officials.

Prizes & Winner Notification: Winners from the abovementioned age groups will be invited to attend a luncheon at the Mayor’s Office with Mayor Bollwage. In addition, a certificate of achievement will be presented and the winning essays will be featured on the City’s Website and Social Media Pages.

Winner's list: Winners will be notified by April 13, 2018 using the contact information they provided with their submissions, as well as announced on the contest page on the City’s Website (
