Detective Expertise

Detectives investigate some of the most demanding and challenging cases, with some crimes taking months or even years to fully investigate. Detectives are tasked with developing expertise in many specific criminal investigative areas.

These areas include:

  • Alcoholic beverage control licensing
  • Arson
  • Burglary
  • Computer crimes
  • Fraud
  • Homicide
  • Megan Law
  • Missing persons

Command Structure

The command structure consists of a Captain commanding five investigative units:

  • The Detective Bureau Day Squad
  • The Detective Bureau Night Squad
  • Identification Bureau
  • Juvenile Division
  • Narcotics

Each unit is individually supervised by a Lieutenant, except for the Juvenile Division which is supervised by a Sergeant. This centralized command allows for a more uniform response to investigations as well as a timely and accurate exchange of intelligence.
